Closing the sustainability skills gap

Get inspired about how to close the sustainability skills gap in your organisation through structured upskilling efforts that instil a curiosity for continued individual learning. Read on to learn how Mannaz is working with Alfa Laval to connect the wider business to the sustainability transformation through expanded project management training and a programme for selected professionals.

Case

The challenge

Alfa Laval works intensely on solutions that enable and accelerate the global transition towards a more sustainable future – both for people and the planet. To reach their ambitious targets and create impact externally and internally, it is key to connect sustainability to the rest of the business.

To strengthen this connection, there is an urgent need to upskill and engage employees widely in the organisation. From legal to R&D, from logistics to finance, employees must develop a sustainability mindset. The actions and decisions made by each business function has a direct impact on whether Alfa Laval is moving further from or closer to its sustainability targets.

Solution

Mannaz and Alfa Laval are collaborating on multiple interventions to integrate sustainability more comprehensively into the rest of the business:

Integrating sustainability into existing project management training: Mannaz is incorporating Alfa Laval’s strategic sustainability focus areas into existing internal project management training. Each step of the PM learning journey has been updated with tailored sustainability elements and sustainability has been integrated into ten project management tools.

Sustainability and ESG Programme for Sustainability Managers: This transformational track upskills selected professionals across Alfa Laval’s business units through a four-day programme covering sustainability and ESG. The programme consists of masterclasses from external and internal experts. It is designed to be highly interactive with a lot of dialogue, including using AI powered dilemmas.

This programme is one of several with the purpose of covering more key people in Alfa Laval to integrate sustainability into the business.

The desired result

The purpose of these interventions is to support the execution of Alfa Laval’s sustainability related strategies across the whole business.

Closing the sustainability skills gap for project managers aims to align processes and projects to work towards Alfa Laval’s sustainability targets. Project managers are key catalysts of strategy execution, so this expanded training is intended to recalibrate their focus to also encompass sustainability dimensions.

For the transformational track, the desired result is that the participants feel more confident to pick up the baton and drive the sustainability transformation. That they become better equipped to handle discussions and questions from the organisation and act as spokespersons. It is intended to be a starting point for learning. Closing the skills gap relies strongly on participants developing an awareness, curiosity and commitment to continue their own continued learning in the fast-moving sustainability area once the programme has officially ended. And furthermore, that the cohorts become communities of continued support.

“Within sustainability, everything is happening so fast and is constantly moving. Therefore, some of the most important aspects of our collaboration with Mannaz is openness, agility and our close relationship. Because of Mannaz’ deep understanding of our business, we can move fast enough and utilise our window of opportunity to create change.”
Anna Celsing, VP Group Sustainability, Head of Sustainability, Alfa Laval
“Mannaz helped us develop the idea of integrating sustainability into existing courses and programmes. And then, they were very quick to execute. They have the competences to both develop the content and structure and to deliver it. Mannaz’ depth in knowledge combined with their ability to navigate the participant experience is unique. As a facilitator, you don’t have to have a deep subject matter knowledge. But Mannaz does. And that is really an added value.”
