Optimising the project management programme
As one of the world’s leading engineering and consultancy companies, Rambøll has a great emphasis on project management. Every single day, talented project managers from across the world help lead projects to success. But one does not make it as far as Rambøll by simply resting on one’s laurels.
Realising the potential
Rambøll spotted unfulfilled potential within the training of project managers despite having already established tailored educational programmes.
The challenge was particularly obvious in terms of the attendance rate during in-class training, which is a part of the existing Rambøll project management programme. Rambøll experienced that several international project managers consciously chose not to participate in the in-class modules in Denmark, as the costs were perceived as problematic both in financial expenditures, but also in time taken away from the actual project.
New digital possibilities
Rambøll went into thorough consideration on how to solve this problem with help from Mannaz. There had to be a way to streamline and shorten the programme without compromising on quality. Considering that Rambøll simultaneously had a strategic vision for improving the use of digital opportunities, the solution was obvious: The programme needed to be 100% virtual.
Pure knowledge and no wasted time
The programme has been completed by several groups of international project managers.
Considering that the programme has already been cut to the core, it has been essential to ensure that participants show up prepared to avoid any wasted time. The participants are therefore divided into groups, where one person takes on the project management role by arranging group assignments and ensuring that all participants are prepared for the virtually facilitated sessions.
Evaluation and final exam
Halfway through the course, there was an evaluation with the managers of the individual participants and relevant colleagues as well as an assessment of the participants’ preliminary feedback.
The programme is completed with an exam in the form of a case-based assignment, which includes 5-7 course elements, which are then implemented in the participants’ own projects.
100% virtual programme with an emphasis on core competencies
Mannaz was not facing an easy task. Rambøll wanted an entirely virtual programme for project managers, which maintained a high level of quality, but was completed in half the time.
The emphasis was to prioritise the content of the programme, and in close collaboration, Rambøll and Mannaz defined the most essential competencies for a project manager at Rambøll. After this, the programme was cut to the core and streamlined, and so it was ensured that the process maintained its emphasis on these core competencies.
Closer collaboration
At the same time, Mannaz realised that an intensive virtual programme with fewer and shorter virtual sessions provided the opportunity for closer collaboration with the project managers. This made it possible to incorporate the project managers’ own cases into the educational material.
Mannaz refers to this approach as their “Explore-Engage-Apply” model, which provides the participants with the opportunity to explore the material digitally, engage in the content in virtual collaboration, and apply the content in their everyday lives.
The new programme has the following phases:
Improved results in half the time
After the first virtual programme in project management, Mannaz measured the results as always. And the new virtual programme impresses.
In both the pre-and post-test as well as in the job test, which measures desired change in behaviour, participants were at the same level or higher as when completing the former programme model at Rambøll.
The conclusion is obvious
The outcome of the programme remained intact or was even improved within half the number of hours. That result comes from focused prioritising of the programme in terms of core competencies, an emphasis on including the participants’ own organisation and dilemmas, and the virtually facilitated sessions, which are delivered in shorter sessions over a longer period of time compared to the former programme. This provides participants with several opportunities to use their new knowledge in their everyday lives, even during the execution of the programme.
